For many years FAMSA has been delivering services in the Plettenberg Bay area from their office in Knysna.  This was done with the assistance of an amazing group of dedicated volunteers from the various communities in and around Plett.
As a result of the steady growth in the need and demand for services a motivation was put forward for the establishment of a Satellite office in Plettenberg Bay.  Recent, limited funding received from the Dept. of Social Development and the Lottery Board, specifically for this, has enabled the dream to become reality!!

Tuesday, 20th October, saw the official opening of the Family and Marriage Society of SA (FAMSA-Plettenburg Bay) offices at no. 6, Dulux Building on the c/o Plettenberg and Main Streets - across from the Post Office.

Present were FAMSA staff, volunteers, stakeholders and friends of the organization.  Ms. Ann Holmes - co-ordinator for FAMSA Plettenberg Bay - welcomed everyone after which a short history of the Organization in Plettenberg Bay was given.  As far back as 2002 a group of trained volunteers have been offering counselling services.  This has developed over the years and currently FAMSA is delivering the following services in the area.
  • Counselling - For anyone in distress, with relationship problems, who finds they cannot cope with a situation, who wants pre-marital counselling, etc.
  • Victim Empowerment - For victims of any crime and trauma. We have special programmes at the local Police Stations.
  • Women in Need - Support groups for abused women in various communities.  We also have projects that would assist them to become financially independent.
  • HIV/Aids Support - Emotional support for persons infected by HIV/Aids and their families.

Mr M. Skosana, head of the District Office of the Dept. of Social Development in George, gave recognition to the invaluable service FAMSA renders to the community.  Without the help of organizations such as FAMSA the government would be unable to meet the needs of the people.  FAMSA was also complimented on good management and for having an effective team of dedicated staff and volunteers.  Coloured ribbons representing the various projects FAMSA does in communities were tied to the green FAMSA ribbon, reflecting the coming together of the organization and the services rendered by volunteers.

The Director, Lou van der Merwe, thanked all present, especially the Dept. of Social Development, the staff and volunteers of FAMSA.

The evening ended on a high note with everyone enjoying the feast provided by the volunteer counsellors.
